Too Much Sugar! 4 Popular Sugary Snacks & Their Healthier Alternatives

Did you know the American Health Association recommends we consume no more than 25-35 grams of sugar per day? Considering a single can of Coke has 39 grams of sugar, I suspect many of us aren’t sticking to this recommendation. But we should! Because eating too much sugar takes a major toll on your health. Excess sugar increases risk for obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. It causes tooth decay and accelerated aging. Sugar can also cause cognitive problems and crash your energy levels. Fortunately ChipMonk is all about finding new ways to cut down on unhealthy sugars. So let’s take a look at a few popular sugar-packed foods and some of their healthier alternatives

YOPLAIT STRAWBERRY YOGURT

Yogurt is excellent for maintaining digestive health, but unfortunately many popular yogurt brands are packed with unhealthy sugar. For example, Yoplait Strawberry Yogurt has 18g of sugar in a single 6oz serving! And who wants to start the day with a sugar crash? Definitely not me. Luckily, we know the perfect substitute

SUBSTITUTE WITH - GREEK NON-FAT YOGURT

Greek yogurt has only 6g of sugar per serving and a rich delicious texture. You can also add your favorite low-calorie sweetener to any greek yogurt to help satisfy that sweet craving. We recommend our special, zero-calorie sweetener blend called AlluMonk (made from a blend of all natural allulose and monk fruit).

KELLOGG’S RAISIN BRAN CRUNCH

Raisin Bran Crunch may sound like a healthy breakfast cereal, but one serving contains 28 grams of sugar. Considering the average cup of milk in America has 13 grams of sugar (which is, of course, ridiculous), your quickie breakfast might have upwards of 40 grams of sugar!

SUBSTITUTE WITH - KELLOGG’S SPECIAL K

Fortunately their are plenty of low-sugar cereal options available at your local grocery. For example, Kellogg’s Special K has less than 1/4 the sugar of Raisin Bran Crunch. Just remember to always check the label, and don’t forget about the milk!

CHIPS AHOY COOKIES

Anyone who has every busted open a pack of Chips Ahoy cookies knows you can’t eat just one, and at 11g of sugar per serving you better watch out. Pair a few cookies with a glass of milk and you’ve just consumed nearly nearly 40 grams of sugar! But don’t worry. There’s a better way!

SUBSTITUTE WITH - CHIPMONK COOKIES

ChipMonk cookies have only 1 gram of sugar per serving! They are also seriously delicious, soft, chewy and packed with wholesome ingredients including Almond Flour & Monk Fruit. Go ahead. Have another!

COCA-COLA

America’s favorite soda pop is unfortunately packed with an absurd amount of sugar. One 12oz can contains 39 grams of sugar, more than anyone should be consuming in an entire day. Of course diet soda is an obvious sugar free alternative, but unfortunately most of those are sweetened with heavily processed, artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose. We’re going to take a controversial stance here:

SUBSTITUTE WITH - SELTZER WATER!

I know. I know. This isn’t a real substitute, but hear me out. Sodas like Coke, Sprite, Fanta, and Mountain Dew are all just way too sweet. Even diet sodas overload your taste palette. If you are a regular soda drinker, try switching to flavored seltzer water instead and you might notice everything else starts to taste a little bit sweeter. You’ll also feel a whole lot better.

Unfortunately this list doesn’t even  scratch the surface of all the unnecessarily sugary snacks out there. Always remember to check the label and seek out your own healthier substitutions. With just a little bit mindfulness we can all keep snacking, be healthy, and feel good.
